Time for the Olympic Games!

Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield have completed their final training camp prior to the Olympic Games and returned home for a ten day break. Nick and Joe have spent 16 days sailing at the Olympic venue, Qingdao, China and now feel ready for the Games to start. 'We go back out at the end of July where will still have a week or so of training before racing begins on the 11th August. We feel as ready as your ever going to feel, we enjoyed our last trip in China and used the time well to get ready for the Olympic conditions. It is now a matter of staying fit and healthy and in the right frame of mind to perform at our best,' said Joe. There have been a large number of reports about the state of the sailing area in Qingdao, with large amounts of algae covering the sea, Nick is confident that everything will be ok come the Olympics. 'When we first arrived in China there was a lot of weed and it was difficult to sail, there have been huge numbers of fishing boats at sea hauling the weed out and it seems a lot better now, I expect by the time we get to the racing there will be little or no weed.' Nick and Joe go to Qingdao and train for 3 days before travelling to Shanghai for a rest and team planning period. Measurement takes place on the 7th August with racing commencing on the 11th and barring no delays finishing on the 18th August.

Rogers and Glanfield finish 6th at Europeans

Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield finished 6th at their last official regatta before the Olympic Games in August. The event was held on Riva Del Garda, Italy and 99 mens teams took part. Despite being the Europeans anyone can enter and the event wa won by Australian team Nathan Wilmot and Malcom Page with Rogers and Glanfield's tuning partners Nic Asher and Elliot Willis finishing 2nd and 1st European. The weather was a far cry from China with flat water, big shifts and winds of 10-14 knots but Joe still insisted the racing was good practice. 'We did not sail at our best and made a few big mistakes that cost a lot of places, but we sailed better towards the end of the event and very nearly did enough to get a medal'. The weather was nothing like China but it was still good practice to race against most of the best teams'. Nick and Joe now head out to China where they will be doing their final preparations at the Olympic venue.

Golden return for Nick and Joe

British sailors Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield have made a successful return to Olympic class competition by winning the Hyeres Olympic Regatta, France. This is the British pair’s second ranking event triumph of the year after bringing home the Sail Melbourne Cup in January. “It’s a good result and really pleasing that we’ve been sailing well, but this week’s really been about the testing the new boat, the win is just a stepping stone along the way to making sure we’re in the best shape we can be for the Olympics in Beijing this summer.” Said Joe Glanfield The Hyeres gold was even more impressive due to the fact it’s their first competition since the 470 Worlds in January. Instead of doing the entire campaign of regattas this season, Rogers-Glanfield have based themselves in Valencia concentrating on light wind training and shedding 10 kilos each in body weight, all in preparations for the difficult sailing conditions expected at the Beijing Olympics in August. The first two days saw wind speeds reaching in excess of 25 knots with big waves hitting the southern French venue, causing plenty of capsizes and breakages among the fleet, however the Athens Olympic silver medallists made a strong start to the regatta with a first and a second from their opening two races to put them on equal points at the top of the table. By the end of day two the pair had amassed a six point lead over nearest rivals. The conditions changed over the next two days of racing with extremely light winds hitting the cost, racing was even cancelled for one of the days, Nick and Joe again managed to keep it together and entered today’s medal two points off the lead. Today they capped off a brilliant week by winning the medal race and taking the championship. Nick Rogers said “Having not raced in nearly three months we’re really pleased with how things have gone. Obviously the conditions in Hyères have been totally different to China, but Joe and I came here really just to check that we’re still on top of the racing side of things. It’s all been going pretty well, and that’s a good positive feeling as it means that if we’re still race sharp we can continue to focus on the training that we think will make a difference in China.” Nick and Joe are sponsored by Volvo Car UK, and you can keep up to date with their regatta and Olympic campaign at www.volvocars.co.uk/sailing

Nick and Joe win Sail Melbourne but finish 9th at World championships

Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield started off their trip to Australia with a comfortable victory at grade 1 event Sail Melbourne. It looked as though they would take this good form through to the World championships and were winning at the half way stage, but faded towards the end of the regatta finishing in 9th overall. 'We felt as though we had what it takes to win both of the events but some poor starts at critical times cost us heavily, we feel disapointed at the moment but we have always known that this year is all about the Olympics at we still feel confident we are on the right path to peaking in August', said Joe. Next stop is light wind training with the british squad in Valencia.
